Meeting of Moldovan President with CEC of Gagauzia
On 21 October President of the Republic of Moldova had a visit to Comrat, where he met the members of Gagauz CEC established to organise the upcoming elections of Governor of Gagauzia. The elections are set to take place on 3 December 2006. Vladimir Vorornin has highlighted several issues regarding this regional election campaign:
It is important to organize free and fair elections;
The main mission of CEC is to ensure free expression and the respect of the citizens’ will, to create equal opportunities for all electoral contestants;
It is rational to evaluate the opportunity to suspend, for the period of election campaign, and to examine judicial litigations concerning electoral contestants;
It is necessary to establish a more tight collaboration between Gagauz CEC, on the one hand, and OSCE and CEC of the Republic of Moldova, on the other hand;
Gagauzia and its people should become the winners of upcoming elections, while after election campaign ATU should become more developed and consolidated, able to ensure the continuation of socio-economic evolutions recorded during the last years in the autonomy, etc. (After Moldpres)
Reactions to the head of state’s opinions
Taking into account the head of state’s appeal, the president of Gagauz CEC, Victor Caloshin, has declared that members of CEC cannot intervene with such advices, as this could be seen as interference into the judiciary’s affairs. Victor Caloshin has mentioned also that the justice is to take the decision regarding the opportunity to suspend the penal cases against electoral contestants, while by this moment CEC did not receive any complaints from candidates concerning the election campaign. Mihail Formuzal, the only candidate in litigation, has declared on Monday that the cases opened against him were not suspended, the following judiciary sitting being set to take place on 6 November in Cahul.
