Conclusions of the CoE experts on elections in Gagauzia
The delegation of the CoE Congress of Local and Regional Authorities (CLRA) has concluded that elections for the Governor (Bashkan) post of Gagauzia were held partially in accordance with international standards in the field. Though it was remarked an improvement of the electoral process in comparison with previous elections, CLRA experts have noted several problems: local law on elections of the Governor of Gagauzia is not adjusted to the Electoral Code of the Republic of Moldova and to the international norms; CEC of Gagauzia and some other electoral councils proved to be not enough unbiased; the lack of an equal access to mass media; the low quality of the electoral lists; violation of the secret vote principle; influences and pressures on voters in some polling stations; disregarding voting procedures, etc.
CLRA experts will monitor as well as the second round of elections, on December 17, and will present a final report on election monitoring after this date. (BASA-press)
Mihail Formuzal considers that not all contestants have respected in these elections the principles for a fair and transparent competition, expressing also his concern that the Central Electoral Commission of Gagauzia did not announce the preliminary results of elections. During a press conference held in Chisinau, Formuzal has declared that Gagauz CEC would be seeking the reason so that to invalidate the results of elections or to eliminate from the electoral competition one of the candidates who has promoted already in the second round of elections.
