Zinaida Greceanii registered as candidate

Finance Minister Zinaida Greceanii was registered on June 2 as candidate to the post of mayor of the Chisinau municipality on behalf of the Moldovan Party of Communists (PCRM). Representatives of registered competitors have already expressed dissatisfaction that Mrs. Greceanii profited of her office of finance minister in order to promote her image via three TV channels of important audience (Moldova 1, NIT and ORT Pervy Kanal v Moldove) before being registered as electoral candidate. The Chisinau Constituency Election Council (CECC) regarded the accusations brought against the PCRM candidate as groundless.

CECC refuses to register candidacy of Vladimir Turcan

The CECC turned down on June 6 the application of the candidate on behalf of the Republican Party of Moldova (PRM), Vladimir Turcan, executive director of the mixed enterprise Elat. It indicated a complaint of PRM, co-chairmen Ion Curtian and Valerian Hortolomei, who have invoked the invalidity of documents submitted by Vladimir Turcan, signed by former PRM chairman Valeriu Efremov. The dispute between the PRM leaders is based on a long story. The Central Election Commission recognised the documents of co-PRM chairmen Ion Curtian and Valerian Hortolomei at the recent March 2005 parliamentary elections.

Also on June 6, CECC refused to register independent candidate Vadim Coltov, job lawyer, because he did not present the needed 10,000 valid signatures of eligible citizens from the Chisinau municipality to support his candidacy.

5 candidates registered

CECC registered five candidates on June 6 for the July 10 local elections. They are: parliamentarian Gheorghe Susarenco, candidate of the Christian Democratic People’s Party; municipal councillor Valeri Klimenko, candidate of the republican social-political movement Ravnopravye and Patria-Rodina bloc; Vladimir Guritenco, candidate of the Democratic Party of Moldova and praetor of the Botanica district of Chisinau; Gheorghe Sima, candidate of the Labour Union Patria-Rodina and leader of this party; Finance Minister Zinaida Greceanii, candidate of the Moldovan Party of Communists.

Under provisions of the Election Code, the period of application for registration of electoral competitors closes with 30 days before election day. Former premier Dumitru Braghis, lawmaker on behalf of the Our Moldova Alliance, is to be registered as independent candidate by deadline June 10. Also, Dorin Chirtoaca is expected to be registered as candidate on behalf of the Liberal Party, and Vladimir Garaba on behalf of the Green Alliance Ecological Party.
