The Parliament has set the date of the general local elections
The general local elections will take place on 14 June this year. The decision has been approved by the MPs representing all parliamentary groups. The draft law has been developed by the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), and the initially proposed date of the local elections was 7 June 2015, but at the plenary Parliament meeting the socialists agreed with the proposal of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) Chairman Vlad Filat to set the date to 14 June. The liberal-democrat leader explained that he requested to have the elections on 14 June so that the 60 days for the organization of the elections might start after the Easter holidays.
At the same time, the Liberal Party (PL) Chairman Mihai Ghimpu proposed that the Parliament set the first Sunday of June as the day for local elections, but MPs eventually decided to only set the date for the elections of this year.
According to the law, the electoral campaign shall begin 60 days before the day of elections.
The date of the local elections had been a subject of discussions over the past several months in Chisinau, after the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) suggested to have them organized in autumn or even later, so that by that time an administrative-territorial reform could be approved in order to reduce the number of the country’s districts (currently 32) and mayors’ offices. However, the PLDM leadership said they renounced that idea because of lack of political will in other parties for that reform. // parlament.md
