European Parliament’s EPP Group urges pro-European candidates to support a single candidate

The Delegation of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament urges pro-European candidates from Moldova to support Maia Sandu as the sole candidate in the presidential election on October 30, and to encourage their constituency to vote for her. The statement was made during a press conference summarizing the visit to Chisinau by Vice-President of the EPP Group, Sandra Kalniete. She pointed to the fact that polls show that Maia Sandu is pro-European candidate with the best chance to win the presidential election. // IPN

Inna Popenco excluded from presidential race

Inna Popenco registration as a presidential candidate was canceled by the Court of Appeal. The court has answered a request form the part of the Central Election Commission which, in turn, was summoned by another candidate, Silvia Radu. Inna Popenco is accused of bribing voters and failing to report all campaign expenditures. The court’s decision can be appealed within three days at the Supreme Court of Justice. // IPN

CEC voted Andrei Nastase’s withdrawal from the race and changed the electoral symbol of Maia Sandu

Central Election Commission has reviewed Andrei Nastase the request regarding his withdrawal from the competition for the presidential election of October 30. According to the same decision, Andrei Nastase will have to submit, within 24 hours, the report on funds collected and the expenses incurred during his campaign.

In the same time after a request from the presidential candidate Maia Sandu, CEC has amended its earlier decision, changing her old electoral symbol with a new symbol proposed by the candidate.

Poll placing Igor Dodon and Marian Lupu as voters’ favourites

At a press conference, the Association of Sociologists and Demographers of Moldova, presented the results of a survey on the presidential elections of October 30. According to the poll, Socialist candidate Igor Dodon would receive 40.5% (or 46.4% out of those who will participate in the elections and know whom they will vote for); circa 13.2% (15.1%) will vote for the Democratic Party candidate Marian Lupu; circa 13% (14.9%) for the PAS candidate Maia Sandu; around 7.8% (8.9%) will vote for DA Platform candidate Andrei Nastase; 4.9% (5, 6%) for PPEM chairman Iurie Leanca, 4.4% (5%) will go to the candidate of “Our Party”, Dumitru Ciubasenco; and almost 0.7% (0.8%) for the PL leader Mihai Ghimpu. The survey was conducted in the period of October 9–18, 2016 on a sample of 1569 respondents from 83 localities and has a margin of error of ±2.4%. // Infotag

Siegfried Muresan requests CEC additional explanations about the number of polling stations opened abroad

MEP Siegfried Muresan called Central Election Commission (CEC) of Moldova to make public the algorithm applied to determine the number of polling stations to be opened abroad in the presidential elections of October 30. According to the text of the official letter sent by the European official “This call was launched because the analysis of the distribution of polling stations for the Moldovan presidential elections, shows that there is no direct link between the number of Moldovan citizens residing in a particular country and the number of polling stations opened in that country”. // Curentul

Monica Macovei sent a support message for Maia Sandu

Monica Macovei, MEP from Romania, sent a message to Moldovan citizens encouraging them to use their vote to help maintain Moldova’s European track as well as for the renewal of the political class. At the same time, the European official said that in the presidential election of October 30, she will support Maia Sandu “a clean candidate, a person who is not caught in corruption scandals, and who is the only one with a political project that will bring to Moldova the missing order, stability and wealth”.
