MAE started the campaign for constitutional referendum
The European Action Movement (MAE) officially started the campaign for the September 5 constitutional referendum. More than 400 members of the party’s council — mayors and local councilors — approved the program of the campaign. Members of MAE decided to call on the population to participate in the referendum for amending Article 78 of the Constitution and vote for direct presidential elections. Party’s Chairman Veaceslav Untila mentioned that his party has already proven its organizing abilities in campaigning for pensions’ increase and collecting signatures, so the party has a very responsible attitude towards the referendum. “We already have experience. We collected 200 thousand signatures in support of pensions’ increase in only a month. We managed to talk to 500,000 citizens. The European Action Movement is a party whose opinion counts, and we enlist the efforts for holding the referendum”. First party’s Vice Chairman Anatol Petrencu stressed that a president elected within the Parliament will owe the parties a debt of gratitude, this is why the head of the state must be elected by citizens in order to represent them rather than politicians. Party’s Secretary General Ion Neagu thinks the current campaign is a “final rehearsal of early parliamentary and presidential election from November. The power of change is in people’s hands, this is why we need to advise them to vote for direct presidential elections. In this way, we will strike the ultimate blow to the Communist Party and other puppet-parties that call the population to boycott the referendum”. Head of the party’s department on relations with diaspora Sergiu Railean said Moldovans from abroad want to come back home, but not in a country where “democracy goes to pieces. We will consolidate democracy in Moldova through direct presidential elections. Our country needs the experience of Moldovans from abroad, this is why we — the diaspora, will vote for popular elections”. (Infotag)
