Central Electoral Commission rejected the
accusations recently madeRO by the Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections. In this regard, CEC invokes the Code of Good Practice on Referendums, adopted in 2008 by the Venice Commission, which would make a difference between campaigning for elections and for a referendum. According to CEC, political parties have the right to boycott the referendum, such an option being equated with the option “against” the issue brought to referendum. CEC is firmly convinced that the decision on registration as a participant in the referendum is a right one, lawful and consistent with European standards in this matter and regrets any statements on this issue, which it considers as “designed to damage the image of the institution.”
