PCRM contests the possibility to vote with expired IDs

The Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM) has appealed in the Chisinau Court of Appeal the decision taken by Central Electoral Commission to allow voting with expired identity documents. PCRM requested the court to annul this decision as illegal and because these actions would allow the possibility of multiple voting in the referendum of September 5. The contested decision was adopted by CEC based on previous practice and based on the information about a large number of expired identity documents that people will fail to renew by election day. Although there is a precedent, PCRM representatives say that situation would be a different one, since it was a smaller number of expired documents and the number of polling stations abroad was lower.

Interim President hopes for a high turnout in the referendum and presumes parliamentary and presidential elections will be held simultaneously

In interview for TVR 1 the interim President of Moldova, Mihai Ghimpu, said that in case of a favorable vote in the referendum of September 5, the presidential and early parliamentary elections shall be held as discussed earlier, simultaneously, on November 14. Mihai Ghimpu also noted that once the results of referendum will be validated, the Parliament will have to meet in order to adopt a decision on Election day, and until that date the law is to be adopted that would set out the procedure for electing the President of the Republic of Moldova by direct vote. The interim President hopes that voter turnout in the referendum of September 5 will be higher than the minimum threshold required by law.

Provocative acts in Corjova are due to electoral period

Deputy Minister responsible for reintegration, Victor Osipov, has presented today the Moldovan Government’s view on the events that took place in the morning of September 1 in the gymnasium of Corjova where Transnistrian militia forces applied acts of provocation and intimidation. Osipov states that Tiraspol authorities pay particular attention to the village of Corjova, especially on the eve of electoral events in Moldova, but he hopes that incidents will not generalize.
